Babybitch are a great live band, and put out good demos too, but they've always spoilt it for me when I hear they're anthem, their crowd pleaser, a song called 'When I'm Good I'm Very Very Good, When I'm Bad I'm Better'. Their fans love it, but to me it just sounds naff, and has always detracted from the rest of their brilliantly, sleazy glam punk.
Looking at the names to these new tracks, my worry was that they where moving away from what (I think) they do best, and concentrating on the crowd pleasing pop songs. But if they want to make pop music like this I'll forgive them anything.
'Heart Throb' bears Babybitch's trademark sleaze both musically and in content. "It's me you see in all your favourite dreams" sings Stephen James Buckley, and it's a bit unnerving, but I'm sure the ladies like it.
'Raging Hormones' is another glam punk stomp, with a killer hook at the chorus. I'd be singing "I, I, I can't behave myself, blame it on my raging hormones" for weeks, if I wasn't to old to really get away with it.
Finally, 'What Would Your Mother Say', up against such stiff competition, suffers a bit initially. It's a return to Babybitch's more dark, twisted, and gothic, offerings of the past. When you give it time though, it's soon as embedded in your head as either of it's popier, catchier, and well, sexier siblings.
I guess I missed the point to begin with. We may think we know what's best for the bands we like, but as Babybitch prove here, we're a sucker for a good pop song. Whether you're a goth kid, punk kid, or hardly a kid at all.
