STEVE MORGAN. BAD RIVER E.P.

Well, where to start. An intriguing prospect this, an an acoustic rocker playing a twelve string who professes a love for The Wildhearts. Morgan has a band backing him this time and they, like him, are very good, complementing the heartache in the lyrics with sympathetic playing.

Steve Morgan

Certain songs stand out; 'Loverboy' telling of the failings of a selfish lover. Gorgeous female backing vocals lift this song way above the usual acoustic dirges and out of the traps. This is a rockier twist on the new acoustic movement led by the incomparable Turin Brakes and the so - wet - it - hurts bleatings of Kings of Convenience. Morgan's love of rock raises it's head on 'Fool For Love' which very nearly strays into 80's poodle rock territory only to be saved by the restrained backing and heartfelt, plaintive vocals.

This e.p seems to be all about capturing moods. 'M.F'. is the star song, reminiscent of Clifford T. Ward's 'Home Thoughts From Abroad'. Beautiful piano, an aching harmonica and lyrics that catch you lost and staring into the distance.

'The Monster We Became' wraps it all up. There is a sense of regret and lost love all over this offering, it just drips with emotion and he conveys that beautifully as all good singer / songwriters do.
